How To Give Your Man A Fashion Makeover

Men and fashion are not necessarily two things that go hand in hand. Guys are known for their strange or lacklustre taste when it comes to clothing and for many stylish women, such a notion can be awful. So, here’s how to makeover your man.

Why

The question you have to ask yourself is why do you want to change his style? Perhaps it’s to give him more confidence, or to make him feel better about himself. If it’s a purely selfish reason then it has less chance of being received well. Do it for him.

Let Him Know

Try and be a little coy here, but do try and let him know that he has some style issues. Some men know they do and just don’t care, however others don’t and may not take kindly to criticism. If he doesn’t want to change his style, don’t worry and let him be. Try again in 6 months or so and maybe the idea will have sank in.

Talk

Talk to him and showcase some of the items that maybe are a little out of style, are in appropriate or need mending. Then ask him whether he wants to dress for style, comfort or to look good and then work with him on deciding on what he wants to wear and how he wishes to portray himself.

Begin

If he agrees to a makeover, then you should begin. Many people prefer to start from the inside out and begin with the items people can’t see, such as socks, underwear t-shirts and undershirts. This gives them the confidence to move on.

Using a style guru or a tailor can help and may make him feel more comfortable as the conversation is less personal. These people will help him find items of clothing to suit his body shape and complement his look. Buying magazines such as GQ and Esquire can also help and give him an idea of what’s out there and what he likes.

Little Things

The little things really matter when going for a new look and additions such as ties, belts and cufflinks can really offset a nice suit and shirt. Good quality goes a long way, so insist on it.

Weekend clothing is somewhat similar and simple items of clothing often work well for men –   think, V-neck jumpers, polo shirts, slacks, jeans, brogues. These are simple but effective and will look a lot better than that overly worn t-shirt he always wears.

Do remember not to be brutal, some people like certain clothing for a specific reason and so make compromises.

Finally, remember that some of the world’s worst dressers are the wealthiest – think Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and others and you don’t recollect style.

Cormac Reynolds writes for a variety of websites in the fashion industry and has done so for half a decade.
